Words Their Way: A Spelling Inventory
A spelling inventory can be used in the classroom as an excellent way to assess student ability to write letters to represent the sounds they hear. In Words Their Way Spelling Inventory, that we will analyze this week, there are three different possible tests: Primary, Elementary and Upper Elementary. Each assessment is comprised of a list of words that increase in complexity of spelling skills. When the spelling inventory is given by the instructor, it is then scored using a feature guide to identify a student’s individual developmental level. This helps play a role in allowing the instructor to determine and understand the leveling of each student, how to best teach them and differentiate instruction.
For this assignment:
First: Read the word study article: https://www.readingrockets.org/article/word-study-learning-word-patterns

Use the directions provided in the linked inventory to help score the sample spelling inventory and appropriately score the student. Watch this example scoring video as well for assistance and additional understanding in the analysis process: https://youtu.be/CqtoZG5mfTI
Lastly: After you have scored the student sample and properly analyzed the results, write a 1-page reflection in which you address the following:
- What did you learn about the students’ spelling needs from scoring the inventory?
- How does “word study” differ from traditional spelling practices in classrooms?
- What are some possible pros and cons to using a spelling inventory and word study approach in the classroom?
