“Why Don’t We Complain?” by William F. Buckley Jr.
1. Buckley built his entire essay around a series of anecdotes, all but one of which ended in people not speaking out. Does this device work for you? Why or why not? Did the one instance when Buckley did speak out jar you or did it work? Why or why not?
2. Buckley states: “I think the observable reluctance of the majority of Americans to assert themselves in minor matters is related to our increased sense of helplessness in an age of technology and centralized political and economic power” (301). He goes on to elaborate about the last five words in this statement. What do you think of this?
3. On a personal basis, does Buckley’s reluctance to complain speak to you? Why or why not?
