The pedestrian by Ray Bradbury:
Figurative language search: Find one (1) example for each type of figurative language and
explain why it is an example. Phrase your answers the same way as the examples provided below
each one.
a) Find an example of a simile. Simile: a comparison using “like” or “as.”
EXAMPLE: A simile can be found in the first paragraph. When Bradbury writes, “like the
smoke of a cigar”, he is comparing Mr. Mead’s breath to cigar smoke.
b) Find an example of a metaphor. Metaphor: a direct comparison, not using like or as.
EXAMPLE: A metaphor can be found in the second paragraph. When Bradbury writes “sudden
grey phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner walls”, he is comparing shadows to phantoms
(ghosts).
c) Find an example of personification. Personification: giving human traits (qualities,
feelings, actions, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colours, qualities, or
ideas).
EXAMPLE: Personification can be found on page 1. When Bradbury writes, “[t]The street was
silent and empty”, he gives the street the human quality of being silent.
d) Find an example of alliteration. Alliteration: when words that begin with the same letter
are placed close to one another.
EXAMPLE: Alliteration can be found on page 1. When Bradbury writes “listen, look”, he is
using Alliteration.
