Step 1 Post your responses to the discussion board.

As you complete this discussion assignment, keep in mind that the recommended strategy for determining the meaning of an unfamiliar medical term is:

1. Divide the term into its word parts

2. Define each word part

3. Combine the meaning of the word part

For this discussion, you will post your responses to the following steps.

1. Begin by selecting an unfamiliar medical term (such as one of the following terms).

  • Symphysis
  • Polyarthritis
  • Xeroderma
  • Subungual
  • Rhytidoplasty

2. Apply the recommended strategy to determine the meaning of the term you selected. Divide the term into its parts:

  • Prefix
  • Term
  • Suffix

3. Provide the definition of each word part:

  • Prefix definition
  • Term definition
  • Suffix definition

4. Define the meaning of the word using the following order: suffix, prefix, and the word root.

5. For each step, include the information listed so that other students can follow your logic.

Step 2 Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two other students.

Select the post you feel contains the most challenging term or the one you would interpret differently. Your response should be a brief description of the characteristic(s) of the term that you believe make it the most difficult to define and how you would interpret the term. Use any personal experience to help support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support your opinions.
