Step 1
- Look up the FBI UCR data for the most recent complete year of data, which can be found at https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/
- Gather the data for Part I crimes in the city and state you live in as well as the U.S. If you do not live in an incorporated city, use the data from the closest city to your home. If you do not live in the U.S., use Riverside, CA for your analysis.
- Complete the chart below, indicating actual data for your selected city (see table information below the chart). In addition, convert the data to crime per 100,000 people (crime number / population x 100,000) for your selected city so you can compare it to state and U.S. information.
Crime in City* | Crime rate in City per 100,000 people | Crime rate in State per 100,000 people** | Crime rate in U.S. per 1000,000 people*** | |

Step 2
- Examine the data compiled above and consider it based on the average clearance rates for communities your size (Table 25).
Step 3
- Compare the most recent data from your city with that of the previous year to assess changes during that time.
Step 4
- Answer the questions from the Discussion Board prompt, posting the statistics you compiled for the chart in Step 1.
DB prompt: In the Discussion Board, use the provided template to compile the crime statistics from the most recent full year Uniform Crime Report from the community where you live. Then answer these questions: (1) Does this data accurately reflects your perception of crime in the community? (2) How does the crime rate compare to the state’s overall crime rate? (3) What percentage of the listed crimes are “cleared” by local law enforcement? (4) What does this data mean to you (provide some insightful reflection on the data and what factors may be driving it up or down compared to the previous year).
