Post 4 is focused on Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) or Guilty But Mentally Ill (GBMI) discussed in Melton Chapter 8 on Mental Status at Time of the Offense. Your post should include the following three components. –Write brief summary (5-10 sentences), including definition and main points, of an area we covered in the Melton textbook or assigned article or case law that week—include citation focus on competency to be sentenced, write what competency to be sentenced is and a couple of points about it from our reading.
–Find (in popular, academic, legal, art etc., sources) and summarize (5-10 sentences summarizing what you have found and providing a couple of main points) and reference (provide link/reference) a current example of something relevant to this topic found in a newspaper article, video/film, new case or supreme court decision, new treatment type/method, or new research supporting or debunking. So for instance if we are reading about not guilty by reason of insanity you may want to find a current newspaper article about a case and how it is being viewed in a particular state or if we are discussing competency for search and seizure, the recent dissent by Justice Sotomayor to the Supreme Court decision on the 4th amendment (Utah v. Strief, https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/15pdf/14-1373_83i7.pdf) may be of interest.
