OPTION A: Because she has difficulty falling asleep at night, Jane Doe stays up until 1 or 2am. Before she goes to sleep she often does 20 minutes on the treadmill or lifts weights.   Often times she also sips on a glass of tea and munches on a bag of chips while updating her social media and binging on her favorite show. If she has a deadline at work she will work on drawing up blueprints for her next project before retiring for the night.

  1. Based on what you have learned in this unit, identify three things that may be impacting her sleep.
  2. Discuss one way that Jane’s sleep could be impacting her ability to function.
  3. List three specific pieces of advice you would offer Ms. Doe to help her fall asleep.

OPTION B: Sleep is a very important part of our ability to function. This unit identified several different characteristics of sleep and the brain changes that happen in each of these characteristics.

  1. Discuss the stages of sleep and describe at least one thing that happens in each of these stages.
  2. Describe the difference between REM and NREM sleep. What is the important difference in each of these types of sleep?
  3. Identify and briefly describe TWO sleep related issues that a person could experience in their life.

OPTION C: Those in the military are often expected to stay awake for long periods of time.

  1. Why is this potentially problematic?
  2. What is one thing that could be done to minimize potential risks?
  3. Think of one other job that might put the same type of demand on a person. What might the risks be in this other job?
