For this section, be prepared to discuss the definitive characteristics of the baroque
style in the visual arts (not music or literature).
Suggestion: Create the following chart.
the section under “Baroque Overview,” make notes that explain and describe the
general characteristics of the Baroque style. In other words, if you saw a Baroque work
in a museum, what features would identify the work as “baroque”?
In the columns for the “Italian Baroque” and “Secular Baroque,” select ONE example for
each genre and analyze its specific details. [You will have six separate examples. You are
not looking for a painting that is both Italian and Secular; you need two different
paintings, one for Italian and one for Secular.]
Provide concrete details and specific examples. To clarify: This does not mean an overall,
general discussion of, for instance, Rembrandt’s paintings. It means instead that you
provide a visual analysis of a specific Rembrandt painting to make a point about the
Protestant Baroque style in the visual arts.
Include page references where key points and evidence can be found.
