QUESTION: Does creatine monohydrate used as a supplement pose any risk of side effects? More specifically, does creatine consumption cause an increase in serum creatinine? What does the scientific literature suggest about whether the consumption of creatine monohydrate poses a risk of damaging the kidneys?
HIS RESPONSE: Generally, creatine is safe. If it is taken in large amounts though, it can cause kidney damage. With the use of creatine monohydrate, it caused only a slight increase in serum creatinine. Like I stated earlier, in large amounts creatine can cause kidney damage (Creatine, n.d.)
