1. A creative nonfiction essay by Evelyn Lau “An Insatiable Emptiness” (page 301) (Trigger Warning for this one–it deals with bulimia and is pretty graphic–let me know if you need an alternate assignment)

Read both creative works at least once before writing your initial post. Your purpose here is not to write creatively, but to think critically.
1. Summarize Lau’s essay and then explain some of the literary conventions that she uses, such as image, plot, characterization, and metaphor. Next, do the same for Gay’s essay–summarize her story and explain some of the literary conventions that she uses to tell it.
2. Explain at least one similarity between the two essays, and explain at least one difference between the two. Similarities and differences may be related to topic, form, literary conventions, or how the essays were constructed.
It should be approximately a couple of paragraphs long.
In your response to your peers, consider their answers. Do you agree? Why or why not? Can you expand on their ideas? Do their ideas give you new ideas?
